Ministry of Education bars educational services to foreigners and Belizeans living outside Belize

By Aaron Humes: As the abruptly ended school term officially closes this week, educational authorities are already preparing for the next.

But as of now, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Education Deborah Domingo has written to District Education Officers, that cannot include those foreigners sending children to school here, particularly from neighboring Guatemala.

As the borders remain closed and will be for some time due to COVID-19, the Ministry says it will not give consideration at this time for daily border crossings to conduct school business or attending classes.

The Ministry says it will uphold the standing legal measures in place to protect Belizeans from COVID-19.

School managers and administrators who determine that someone has flouted the ban must immediately contact Police, the District Education Manager and local Health authority.

Guatemala in particular has seen a spike in COVID-19 cases and has had to regularly lockdown to prevent further transmission.

A formal decision on how to treat this class of students is expected before school reopens as projected in August.
