Dangerous hand sanitizer being sold in Belize, massive recalls countrywide

Posted: Tuesday, July 28, 2020. 6:40 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health (MOH) is working with the Customs and Excise Department to rid the country of a large number of hand sanitizer products that have been found to be dangerous to consumers.

In a letter sent from the MOH to the Customs Comptroller Colin Griffith, the MOH notes that it became aware, though a notice from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the hand sanitizers contained Methanol, a chemical that can be toxic if absorbed through the skin or ingested. The list contains over 70 products, the majority of which were manufactured in Mexico. Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that that the Customs and Excise Department must work in collaboration with the MOH to ensure that no one is harmed by these products.

“Therefore, the Ministry of Health, based on International Public Health Regulations hereby advises that all items on the list attached be banned and also recalled countrywide so as to ensure the safety to all our citizens,” Manzanero said.

He also said that licensed importers wishing to import hand sanitizer must submit their own contact information, all manufacturing information for the products they wish to import, a copy of certification or marks of competent authority, a copy of the material safety datasheet, results of the composition analysis from an accredited laboratory, location of the intended storage facility, and list of prospective markets or customers.
