By Aaron Humes: By today’s end, two Orange Walk District men are expected to be charged for facilitating an aircraft to land at an unregistered aerodrome – a farm in the Neuland area of northwestern Orange Walk District.

Three more are being held at the town police station at this hour.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told reporters that authorities had been tracking the aircraft from South America up to when it disappeared off the local radar.

But northern neighbors Mexico tracked the plane down and police visited the scene almost as the conspirators set out to flee.

According to Williams, one of the suspects is the owner of the farm, while the other individual is a Mennonite man who is the owner of a bulldozer used to push the plane off of the road and into some bushes.

A third person, who Williams said is still in custody, is a well-known Orange Walk businessman who owns a tow truck that was used to transport a bulldozer to the area.

While no cargo was found on the plane, police found a tractor at the scene, motorcycles, lights, and several power saws that were used to clear the makeshift airstrip in preparation for the landing of the aircraft.

Williams said that both suspects were caught attempting to flee the area and that there is sufficient evidence to prove that they might be connected to the landing of the aircraft.

The charges against both men could be upgraded pending the results of forensic tests which would ascertain whether any illegal cargo was on board the plane.

The Commissioner said that he suspects that the drugs are still in the country and that efforts are underway to recover it.

We’ll have more coming up.
