PUP to choose municipal election candidates next week

By BBN Staff: “I see a greater future for Belize City,” declares its Mayor, Bernard Wagner.

That future starts with accomplishing something the People’s United Party hasn’t done since 2006 – winning back-to-back terms in office at City Hall.

According to Channel 7 News, some 27 aspirants will be whittled down to 10 at a delegate convention scheduled for next weekend – it doesn’t appear Wagner himself has any challengers.

Mayor Wagner explains: “I believe in the system of the party. The party is a very democratic system and there have been many aspiring councilor candidates and the party felt that it was better than we give that process the opportunity to produce the best candidates, the best councilor candidates so that we could drive the city forward, given the fact that we now have a central government that is aligned with the Belize City Council.”

Wagner says he has “unfinished business” with the remaking of the Old Capital: “Great things could happen. Great synergy could be built… We could see our city live out its vision of being a modern metropolis where opportunities exist for everyone and where there is less [un]employment – there are businesses and there [are] jobs. This is what people are calling for every day and so the new council whenever it is unveiled, I believe it will be the best of the best…I have so much planned for this city that I want to see materialized and so that is the essence of my candidacy to ensure that I am given another term along with the council so that we could move our city forward.”

Prominent City residents to run under the PUP banner include Micah Goodin, Kaya Cattouse, Edmund Kwan, Joseph Stamp Romero, and Moses Sulph.
