Park Rangers sworn in as special constables

Posted: Thursday, March 25, 2021. 9:00 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: This week, 29 park rangers were honored by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management for completing training to become special constables.

On Wednesday the rangers had their graduation ceremony at the Shipstern Nature Reserve in Sarteneja Village, Corozal District, where they met with the Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management, Orlando Habet.

The Ministry said that the rangers participated in an intensive training program from March 15 to 24, 2021, which was funded by the Protected Areas Conservation Trust and co-designed and facilitated by instructors from the Police Training Academy, the National Biodiversity Office, and the legal counsel within the Ministry.

“The training was designed to strengthen the capacity of park rangers across the country in the application of relevant biodiversity legislation (Green Laws) and equip them with knowledge of key concepts and techniques such as evidence collection, chain of custody, procedures on conducting proper investigations and case file preparation,” the Ministry said. “These rangers are now vested with the legal authority to carry out detention and arrests of persons encountered in environmental crimes.”

During his address to the graduates, Minister Habet implored the rangers to remain committed to protecting Belize’s national assets for the current generation and those yet to come.

Habet also took the opportunity to affirm his ministry’s commitment to furthering conservation work in Belize by continuing ongoing programs and implementing future initiatives geared towards improving skills and technologies.
