Public Service Union condemns government ad campaigns, calls on media to stop airing anti-union ads

Posted: Tuesday, April 27, 2021. 1:29 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Public Service Union (PSU) publicly condemned the Government of Belize’s advertisement campaign relating to the ongoing negotiations with the joint union negotiating team and called on media houses across the country to stop airing those ads.

The PSU said that the government ads are geared towards spreading misinformation and hatred aimed at misleading the public on the issues of good governance and 10 percent salary cuts for teachers and public officers.

“The PSU believes that media houses have a duty and a responsibility to fact-check these anti-unions political ads and to refrain from broadcasting political ads which promotes hatred and misinformation to the general public,” the PSU added. “While the PSU acknowledges that media houses are private entities with the right to generate revenues through advertisement or other acceptable means, the Union does not believe that the promotion of hate for profit should form part of any media organization business model.”

The PSU went on to say the Union will not offer comment, engage in any interviews or make appearances on any shows with any media house that continues to air the anti-union ads, which it also claims are being paid for from public funds and being voiced by a public officer.

The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) recently said that it would pull its support from media houses that run anti-union ads, by having its members unfollow their social media pages. Thus far the Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) has not made a public statement regarding the issue.
