Belize Fire Service: The victim of arson was told her house would be burned down

Posted: Wednesday, August 18, 2021. 5:33 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize National Fire Service (BNFS) says that it has concluded that the fire that occurred in Belize City last night was a case of arson.

The station supervisor for the BNFS Kenneth Mortis said that the department visited # 28 Iguana Street Extension, Belize City, just before 9:00 p.m. to extinguish the blaze. The structure was completely destroyed and investigations ruled out electrical fault as the cause, as the one-room dwelling did not have power. The occupant, 33-year-old Lisa Louriano, was not at home at the time, as she was detained by police in relation to the stabbing death of 47-year-old Albert Broaster.

“We gathered enough information to conclude that this building was intentionally set fire by a person or persons unknown, based on a previous altercation between those individuals and Ms.Louriano,” Mortis said. “The threat was made that before the end of the day the house would be to the ground by means of fire and those threats manifested themselves.”

He added that there was no accelerant used to assist in the burning of the house, as the wooden structure provided its own accelerant and fuel to sustain the fire. Mortis said that it was fortunate the house was more than 40 feet from any other structure, which kept the fire from spreading to other homes.
