By BBN Staff: Police say that they have closed down two illegal gambling houses in Belize City over the weekend.
Both establishments were raided on Friday, August 27. The first was on Nurse Seay Street where Lester Levi and ten others were found to be gambling. The patrons were arrested and charged for breach of gambling laws, while Levi was charged for hosting an illegal gathering under the current COVID-19 prevention protocols. Police say Levi may be facing more serious charges at the end of an investigation.
The other gambling house was located on Freetown Road, where Irwin Neal and several others were arrested and charged.
“We continue to urge those persons to take seriously the regulations in respect to the health issues, and those things are discouraged,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett.
Myvett went on to say that is has become apparent that illegal gambling houses are becoming a recurring problem, which has prompted police operations to address the issue.
