By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing is moving to urgently fix a collapsed retaining wall or revetment at mile 7, Philip Goldson Highway, outside Ladyville, Belize District.
According to the Ministry, undercurrents of the Belize River which flows by undermined and collapsed the wall, reducing the width of the highway to 1 and a half lanes of access.
The wall had been built in 2009 when that portion of the highway was being reconstructed.
The Ministry’s statement said it had managed to contain and control the damage and now is looking at multiple options to replace the former structure with a better-designed and permanent solution.
While plans are being drafted and material gathered, the Ministry will widen a section of the roadway, about 300 feet, for continued access.
Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution on approaching the area and the Ministry apologized for any inconvenience caused.
