St. Kitts and Nevis mourns as Former Governor-General Sir Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton passes away

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former Governor-General of St. Kitts and Nevis, Sir Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton, has died at the age of 73, deeply affecting the citizens of the twin-island Federation, as reported by Caribbean Loop News. Sir Seaton, who served as the fourth Governor General of St. Kitts and Nevis from 2015 to 2023, vacated the office earlier this year.

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis expressed their grief in a heartfelt condolence message, acknowledging the significant loss experienced not only by Sir Seaton’s family and friends but also by the entire nation.

They stated, “Sir Tapley Seaton had a long and distinguished career of service to his country and fellow citizens and residents. His legacy is deeply etched into the rich history of our beloved twin-island Federation, as one of the nation’s true statesmen and patriots.”

Throughout his career, Sir Seaton was noted for his unwavering commitment to justice and preserving the judicial system. Remembered as a philanthropist and an influential leader, he is praised for the indelible contributions he made to the Federation and its people.

Before ascending to the role of Governor General, Sir Seaton held several notable positions in the legal sector, including Attorney General of St Kitts and Nevis (1980-1995), and acting High Court Registrar (1975-1980). He was appointed as one of Her Majesty’s Counsels (Queen’s Counsel) in 1988, and knighted as a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (GCMG) in 2015.

Sir Seaton also received recognition as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1985. Among his most significant achievements, he is credited as one of the architects of the Constitution of Saint Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis, showcasing his acumen for legislative drafting in numerous Acts and Bills.

In addition to his legal and civic duties, Sir Seaton was an active member of various national committees, boards, and organizations. He served as Director of the St Kitts Sugar Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC), President of the St Christopher Heritage Society, and Chairman of Cable & Wireless, among others.

The government lauded his commitment to nation-building, stating, “We are indeed grateful for his unwavering commitment to nation-building over the years.” The statement also paid homage to Sir Seaton’s significant influence, “His Excellency Sir Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton GCMG, CVO, KC, JP, LLD has positively impacted the lives of many throughout his career and will be deeply missed.”
