Maya-Angelou

Wednesday, May 28 2014. Larry Waight Reporting: American author, poet and civil activist, Maya Angelou died this morning in North Carolina at age 86. Maya was known for using her writings to provide eloquent and powerful commentary on race, gender and living life and was an inspiration to millions of people including myself.

We are saddened to learn about the death of this wonderful person and on behalf of the Belize Media Group, we send our sincere condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time.

We also want to share with our fellow Belizeans and the world, ten of her most powerful quotes:

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.

Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.

Nothing will work unless you do.

It’s one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, to forgive. Forgive everybody.

Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.

I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.

She was an extraordinary symbol in the United States and the world of what can be accomplished using poems and memoir.

Rest in peace Maya Angelou.

Watch now:

In addition to her well-known autobiographies, Maya Angelou has steadily written poetry over the years. In this video Professor Angelou recites her poem, “And Still I Rise,” from her volume of poetry And Still I Rise, published in 1978.
