By BBN Staff: Edmond Castro, who has ministerial responsibility for the Belize Port Authority, has conducted a tour of port and boat transportation facilities in the South.

Accompanied by Ports Commissioner Merlene Bailey Martinez, Port Authority Operations Manager Sherlett Martinez and Big Creek Officer in Charge (Belize Port Authority)  Jessica Godoy, Castro first visited boat transportation facilities operated by Independence businessman Carroll Burgess, owner of Hokey Pokey Water Taxi, which transports customers between Placencia and Independence.

He and  his team were then taken on a tour of the Port of Big Creek, led by General Manager Gustavo Carrillo and Operations Manager Aldus Forman.

Finally, they visited the offices of the Big Creek Group of Companies, where they held discussions with that company’s General Manager, Said Flores.

The Big Creek Group of Companies produces and exports banana, shrimp and citrus, and also manages the shipping of bulk and containerized cargo.

In the South, construction of another deep water port, to be built at Commerce Bight (Dangriga) is in the early stages of planning.
