By BBN Staff: Hurricane Maria has been upgraded to a category three hurricane. Maria is the strongest system in the Atlantic at this time. The storm now has 120-mile per hour winds as it nears the Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Center  (NHC) reports that potentially disastrous impacts may occur in parts of the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Maria is the fourth major hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.

Later today, the Leeward Islands will see the first impacts from Maria. Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique are among the locations that will see the most severe impacts.

On Wednesday, Maria is expected to make landfall in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as a strong Category 4 hurricane.

A hurricane warning is now in effect for the Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico is under a hurricane watch.
