By BBN Staff: Following a meeting in Panama last week between Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington and his Guatemalan counterpart, Foreign Minister Sandra Jovel, Guatemala is moving toward normalizing diplomatic relations with Belize.
The meeting, which was the first such bilateral meeting since Jovel took up her new post, yielded several commitments to restoring diplomacy including returning an ambassador to Belize.
Guatemala had recalled its ambassador to Belize in 2016 at the height of tension following an incident, in which a Guatemalan minor was killed in crossfire with a Belizean patrol. An investigation by the Organization of American States (OAS) vindicated Belize from allegations that Belizean authorities acted illegally.
The countries are to name a bilateral commission to fully implement the 13 agreements signed in Placencia in 2015 and source funding for the OAS adjacency zone office.
