By BBN Staff: Belize has received a “fair” rating on its most recent reef report card.
BBN notes that this is an improvement from the last progress report.
The reef health index is at 2.8 which is not far off from the regional average for the Mesoamerican Reef, which serves as a barrier for Belize, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
Of these four countries, Honduras got a “good” grade of 3.0 on its reef report.
Conservationists say Belize can work harder for a better grade. According to Janelle Chanona, the Vice President of OCEANA in Belize, our country can do better to improve the reef’s ratings.
She told the press that she is working towards the day when Belize’s marine assets can be considered as being in excellent shape.
