US State Department updates Belize travel advisory

BBN Staff: The United States (US) State Department updated its Belize travel advisory to level 2 last Wednesday, advising travelers to Belize to exercise increased caution when in the country.

“Violent crime, such as sexual assault, armed robbery and murder, is common,” the advisory said. “Local police lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents,” the advisory added.

The State Department advised anyone traveling to Belize to be aware or surroundings, avoid walking at night, not resist robbery attempts, be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMS, conceal affluence, and to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.

The State Department also advised that those who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergency situations.
