BEL employees protest for new uniforms

Posted: Tuesday, May 8, 2018. 4:28 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Yesterday close to 75 employees at the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) showed up to work in casual clothing.

They were ordered to return home and change into their uniform but that was hardly the case.

Instead they went home and stayed home.

This was to protest the fact that many employees still have not receive d new uniforms, which they were to have received in January.

General Secretary of the Belize Energy Workers’ Union (BEWU), Marvin Mora, today told BBN that the union met with BEL Management and the matter was ironed out.

According to him, within the next two weeks employees will receive new uniforms.

According to Mora, he is glad that things worked out smoothly.

“I don’t like to be confrontational. I like to use diplomacy,” he told BBN.

Of the almost 250 non-management employees at BEL, almost 160 belong to the union.
