By BBN Staff: This morning, the Belize Police Department installed a new booth near the Matron Roberts Polyclinic, to increase the safety of persons accessing healthcare in the area.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Howell Gillett, explained that several persons have had difficulty receiving healthcare from the facility because their affiliations make them a target.
This at times, as seen in the past, bring rivaling gang members who seek medical attention.
Gillett said that the department is hoping to achieve a number of objectives by installing the booth, including improving police response time to incidents,
making health care accessible to all regardless of neighborhood, creating a safer working environment for medical staff and improving the working conditions of officers working in the area.
Gillett also said that he hopes the new booth will serve as a deterrent to crimes in the area.
Earlier this year, 23-year-old Shakedi Baizar was gunned down in the area, which sparked a series of retaliatory killings which eventually led to the declaration of a State of Emergency.
