Belize Peace Movement says that Belize’s territorial integrity is not for negotiation

Posted: Thursday, January 24, 2019. 3:33 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Belize Peace Movement (BPM) today issued a statement saying that the PUP’s announcement yesterday declaring ‘No’ to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is a step in the right direction but it is not enough.

The BPM says that even in the event of a successful ‘NO’ vote on the 10th of April, a future PUP administration intends to reintroduce ICJ adjudication as the means of settling the territorial dispute.

“This position is very unfortunate, given the overwhelming public sentiment and rejection of the ICJ adjudication route,” the statement said.

The movement asserts its beliefs that the territorial integrity of Belize is not up for negotiation or litigation.

“ That there are inherent dangers in surrendering our sovereignty and territorial integrity to the hands of the ICJ and that the reasons cited by the government and proponents for acceding to ICJ adjudication, are all matters that can be effectively managed by any competent government administration in fulfilling its constitutional mandate to serve in the best interest of the nation and people of Belize,” it added.

The BPM affirms that it will continue to advocate for improved governance, steeped in the fundamental principles ascribed to good governance, toward a corruption-free Belize and the preservation of all 8,867 square miles of our sovereign territory, via an unconditional rejection of ICJ adjudication, as a means of settling the Guatemalan claim.
