Places You Should Visit When Touring Belize

Posted: Sunday, February 10, 2019. 7:12 am CST.

BBN Staff: When traveling through Central America, Belize is one country you shouldn’t miss. It’s popularity continues to grow, and it is frequently cited as one of the new hotspot travel destinations. Here are a few places you should check out when touring the country:

Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve

Located in the northern part of Ambergris Caye is the 1996 established reserve that spans over 26,000 acres. It’s one of the most lively places to visit in Belize, with a limitless amount of activities that will let your mind and body wander. There is diving, snorkeling, and sport fishing (off Rocky Point). Explore your wildest adventures and see the beautiful relict reefs and bedrock limestones of the Yucatan. If you’re looking for an adventurous hike, or a relaxing swim, this is somewhere you will definitely find yourself on vacation.

Actun Tunichil Muknal

Also known as ATM locally, the Actun Tunichil Muknal is a cave near San Ignacio, Cayo District, and is notable for its rich history as a Mayan archaeological site with skeletons, ceramics, and stonewares. Not for the faint of heart, the ATM has some spots where you can still see skeletal remains. This is for the adventurous sort, because you will have to wade through water and hike around in order to actually experience the beauty.

Princess Hotel and Casino

For some entertainment while touring Belize, visitors should check out the Princess Hotel and Casino in Belize City. This casino is similar to the casinos you’ll find in Las Vegas, meaning that you’ll find all of the best known games here like Texas Hold’em and Blackjack. It’s a great place to check out if you’re looking for a break from wildlife adventures.

Xunantunich

Xunantunich is an Ancient Mayan archaeological site located in western Belize above the Mopan River. The name means “Sculpture of Lady,” coming from the 1892 sightings of a “Stone Woman” who is said to appear and disappear into a stone wall. The journey there is almost as fun as visiting the site itself. You take a hand-cranked ferry over the river, and when you get there, you discover that there are more than 25 Mayan temples and palaces to explore. You can also discover El Castillo while you’re there, which is an astounding 130 feet high.

Turneffe Atoll

Located in the southeast of Ambergris Caye, Turneffe Atoll is the largest coral atoll in Belize. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef that encircles a lagoon. It measures 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, and is home to hundreds of species of sea creatures and corals that are commercially important. It also is known for its steep drop-offs, making it perfect for divers of all skill levels, so if you’re a beginner or a professional diver, Turneffe Atoll is definitely a recommended place to lose yourself!

Aguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary

The Aguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in the Toledo District of southern Belize, and declared a sanctuary in 1998. It encompasses over 5,000 acres of land, and is critical for the preservation of biodiversity in the country. This sanctuary is extremely important to maintain and is a top priority zone, as it is home to a variety of endangered species. It is said to be a serene yet beautifully exotic place to visit, with hot springs and hiking available in every corner.

Big Rock Falls

This is truly considered a hidden gem of Belize. Big Rock Falls is a 150-foot waterfall on Privassion River in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve of the Cayo District. The journey getting there is truly worth it, as it is one of the most tucked-away visions of the world. You can be there for an adrenaline-seeking cliff diver, or there for a relaxing one-of-a-kind experience laying on the rocks. It’s also close to Rio Pools, if you want to further your day trip to Big Rock Falls.

Benque House of Culture

For those who want to learn more about Belize culture, the Benque House of Culture is the perfect spot to educate yourself. It’s essentially an art gallery funded and sponsored as an NGO, and is a perfect spot to soak in the history of the Mestizo community in Belize. Filled with photographs and relics of Belize history, this museum is one of the highest recommended spots in the country.
