By BBN Staff: Author and past winner of the Belize Literary Prize, Ix-Chel Poot, has won the 2019 Copal Distillery Writer-in-Residence Fellowship to attend the upcoming Belize Writers’ Conference.
The fellowship enables Poot to attend the conference free of charge (a $4,500 value) and she will meet with a New York literary agent for career development advice.
Poot, who is the Executive Director of the National Council on Ageing, said that she feels honored to have won the fellowship and the opportunity it presents because she has always been passionate about writing
“I am grateful to Anya Fernald and the Copal Distillery Foundation for funding this fellowship expressly for a Belizean, without this support I would not be able to attend this year’s conference,” Poot said.
The Belize Writers’ Conference is a professional development conference for fiction, nonfiction, and memoir writers from around the world. The conference takes place April 6 to 11, 2019, at Jaguar Reef Lodge in Hopkins. Belize-born Joey Garcia is the conference’s founder and executive director. The Belize Writers’ Conference includes five days of workshops, critique sessions, and master classes on building a fulfilling career as an author.
The Copal Distillery Fellowship, which is the first and only literary fellowship for a Belizean writer in Belize’s history, was created by Joey Garcia and funded by a generous donation from Anya Fernald of Belcampo Belize, and the Copal Distillery Foundation. Working together, Copal Distillery and the Belize Writers’ Conference.
