Young women charged in knife brawl

By Aaron Humes: A teenager, 18, along with her friend, a 24-year-old pregnant woman find themselves in big trouble with the law. They allegedly followed a group of persons and ended up pulling out knives and inflicting injury to as many as five other women.

Danika Sheka Beaton, 18, an unemployed resident of Dolphin Street, Belize City along with pregnant mother, Nicole Lamb, a resident of George Street, Belize City appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate, Aretha Ford, where they were charged jointly with wounding upon Angela Bennett.

Beaton was additionally charged with 5 counts of aggravated assault with a knife upon five females, all on April 7, 2018, in Belize City.

The court prosecutor objected to bail on several bases. Deadly instruments, knives, were involved; the victims appeared to be walking away when they were pursued and attacked with intent to injure, and that because of the atmosphere of crime and retaliation, the women should be remanded for their own personal safety.

In their own defense, Beaton told the court that she was acting to protect herself and that others were involved. Lamb said that in addition to being her child’s caregiver, she was on the sidelines of the fight and was only drawn in to take away Danika’s knife, resulting in an injury to her buttocks. But she says she has not made a report to pursue court charges.

Senior Magistrate Ford set bail of $3,000 on the basis that Beaton stay away from anyone involved or other prosecution witnesses and avoid being charged with any other offenses while being out on bail. As of this writing she is remanded to the Central Prison until she can make bail. Lamb is out on bail of $1,000.
