Sarstoon blocked by Guatemalan gun boats

Posted: Thursday, April 25, 2019. 4:36 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: This morning, Wil Maheia of the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) along with a group of Belizeans were headed to visit the Sarstoon island.

But, they didn’t make it there, because as they approached near the area of the Sarstoon river, they noticed that three Guatemalan gun boats were stationed at the river.

“This morning as we approached the river, there were 3 Guatemalan gun boats, 1 on the outskirt and the other 2 boats blocking the channel where you enter the river. So, we decided to call off our trip,” Maheia stated in a video interview.

Maheia also noted that there were no members of the Belize Coast Guard or the Belize Defense Force in the area therefore they called off the trip.

Maheia further informs that the mouth of the Sarstoon river is currently completely blocked for Belizeans.

The Sarstoon river has been an area of persistent conflict between Belize and Guatemala with members of the Guatemalan Armed Forces constantly intercepting Belizeans traversing the Sarstoon river.
