Government of Belize extends deadline for gill net consultations

Posted: Saturday, May 11, 2019. 9:06 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Yesterday the Government of Belize (GOB) extended the deadline for members of the public to submit information relating to the use of gillnets in Belize’s waters.

GOB, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Immigration, announced that the deadline has been extended to May 31, 2019.

“The purpose of conducting this information gathering is to obtain wide stakeholder views and input pertaining to current gillnet usage so as to inform the consideration of socio-economic and environmental impacts in relation to fisherfolk, the fisheries resources, and marine ecosystems,” the ministry said.

The ministry went on to say that the Gillnet Taskforce along with an independent consultant will compile and analyze the information submitted by the public to assess the benefits, risks, threats and impacts of gillnets.

After the analysis is complete, the task force will then relay the findings back to stakeholders through consultations once analyses have been completed. The information gained through the consultations will inform recommendations made for future gillnet use in Belize.

“Individuals, companies and/or organizations are encouraged to submit information by completing the attached form and append any information they wish to share as it relates to gill nets in the territorial waters of Belize,” the ministry added.
