Attorney General forsakes politics: sister and son not going anywhere, says PM Barrow

Posted: Friday, May 24, 2019. 9:49 am CST.

By Aaron Humes:Queen’s Square and Mesopotamia electoral divisions, located next to each other in the heart of Southside Belize City, have been safe as houses for the United Democratic Party since 1984 in the case of the former and 1993 in the case of the latter.

But the formidable tag team of Prime Minister (P.M.) Dean Barrow and Housing Minister Michael Finnegan are both retiring, and the P.M. and UDP leader is turning to what he believes is a pair of safe hands in both divisions.

Originally, reports say, the plan was to have current Senator and Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte run in Queen’s Square and former mayor of Belize City Zenaida Moya in Mesopotamia. Peyrefitte also reportedly had desire on party leadership.

But the former Freetown candidate eventually chose to run in nearby Port Loyola and suffered a shock upset to former city councilor Philip Willoughby; Moya has been pushed to the fringes in favor of the Prime Minister’s first son, Music Ambassador “Shyne” Barrow.

And more recently, the Prime Minister’s sister and chief campaigner in Queen’s Square, Denise “Sista B” Barrow, has been mooted as his successor there.

So where does that leave Peyrefitte? While the Prime Minister still clearly likes him, he said it was up to him to state his political plans, but that both Queen’s Square and Mesopotamia were now taken.

“Queen Square is for Sista Barrow who again proved her worth…  So how on earth could I ever say to my sister that it can be anybody but her?  She is the most deserving.  She is the one who is running that constituency for the last what, three elections and she’s done wonderfully well.  I think when she is on her own she will win by an even bigger margin,” the Prime Minister gushingly told reporters on Monday.

And indeed it appears Peyrefitte has given up his political desires, telling reporters on Tuesday that for now he will focus on revamping the Attorney General’s Ministry and in particular the Vital Statistics Unit.

As for party leadership which has yet to be decided, no obvious candidates have emerged beyond current deputy leader and Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber and re-instated National Security Minister and Belmopan titan John Saldivar.
