Saving jaguars – The Belize Zoo!

Posted: Tuesday, May 28, 2019. 5:56 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is currently home to 17 jaguars.

This is part of the zoo’s Problem Jaguar Rehabilitation Program (PJRP).

The program is an initiative to save jaguars who were at risk of being killed and poisoned because of hunting farm animals.

The Belize Zoo began the program to use the jaguars for research and education.

In addition, when jaguars are taken to the rehab center, they are treated with kindness and become more ‘friendly’.

Three of the jaguars at the Belize Zoo are a result of the success of the program.

Visitors get to experience an amazing up-close encounter with our paw- friends at the zoo.

They also enjoy their own pools, trees and special toys.

If you are lucky enough, zookeepers will give them a little treat and you will see ‘Junior Buddy’s’ special moves.

The Belize Zoo is proud to take the lead in providing the PJRP as an option for jaguars who were facing a bleak future in Belize.
