By BBN Staff: This weekend was filled with exciting games in the CONCACAF Gold Cup as eight (8) teams battled in the quarterfinal round to secure a spot in the semifinal.

Earlier tonight the US, the Gold Cup defending champion, beat Curacao 1 nil despite being outplayed by Curacao, particularly in the second half. Curacao is a 171 sq. mile Caribbean nation with just over 160,000 people but their national team gave an impressive performance. A header in the 25th minute by Weston Mckennie was enough to propel the US national team to the next round. With this victory, the US has advanced to the semifinal round for the 10th straight time.

A very tight game was played this evening between Jamaica and Panama, with Jamaica prevailing 1 nil. A penalty awarded to Jamaica due to a hand ball by the Panamanian defender was confidently scored by Darren Mattocks in the 75th minute and this score held up to regulation time.

On Saturday, Haiti defeated Canada 3-2, by scoring 3 goals in the second half to overcome a 2 nil first half deficit. This is the first time Haiti is making it to the semifinal.

Later on Saturday night, Mexico and Costa Rica battled to a 1-1 tie and went on to a penalty shootout. Mexico’s football fans got the scare of their lives when the Costa Rican goalkeeper stopped the first penalty from Mexico’s Raul Jimenez. Mexico triumphed in the end, winning the game with an overall score of 5-4 in sudden death penalties.

The upcoming semifinal games has Haiti playing against Mexico on Tuesday (2nd July) and Jamaica will match up against the US on Wednesday (3rd July). The winners of these 2 matches will meet on Sunday, 7th July to determine who will be crowned the 2019 Gold Cup champions.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is held every two (2) years and 16 teams battle for the championship. The teams come from North America, Central America and the Caribbean which is the area that CONCACAF represents. The 2019 Gold Cup is the 15th being held by CONCACAF, and this year the USA is hosting the games.
