Future Jaguars split first two games of Under-15 championship

Posted: Tuesday, August 6, 2019. 6:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize’s under-15 boys’ football team is playing in the CONCACAF championship this week at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, United States.

The “Jaguar Cubs” debuted against French Guiana, losing 3-0. A note from the Football Federation of Belize says, “The game was dominated by Belize and the guys played with confidence and pride despite their nervousness. Being away from home and the security of family wasn’t an easy task but these young boys took on the challenge…. our young boys got their first real international experience and exposure. Most of the players had never traveled or played internationally and we are incredibly proud of the representation.”

Today, Belize lashed St. Kitts and Nevis by the same scoreline, 3-0, with goals from Christopher Moro, Allan Castillo and Allison Torres. They face St. Lucia on Thursday.

Belize is playing in the second division, separate from the big boys such as Mexico, defending champions, and the United States. A trio of European sides – Portugal, Slovenia and Israel – were invited to participate.

The Federation says that win, lose or draw this week, “Our development of young talent isn’t focused on the immediate benefits or victories we will claim. We have a long term plan that will allow our footballers room for development and growth.”

National A Team coach Vincenzo Annese is overseeing the U-15 side in Florida.
