St. Martin’s Credit Union commemorating International Credit Union Day

By BBN Staff: Tomorrow, October 17, will mark the celebration of International Credit Union Day and St. Martin’s Credit Union (SMCU) in Cayo is marking the occasion by either hosting or being a part of various activities.

SMCU is hosting customer appreciation day tomorrow at both its San Ignacio and Benque Viejo branches, where members visiting the office to conduct transactions will be treated to refreshments and cards reminding them of the work of the credit union. On Friday, the SMCU,
as a part of its community outreach efforts, will be donating a motorcycle to the San Ignacio Police Formation.

Raymond Tzul- General Manager of the SMCU told Breaking Belize News (BBN) that the organization has noticed a spike in the level of crime in the twin towns recently, which prompted the donation.

“We looked at the impact it would have, and how significant that would be. We determined that helping the police would have a wider impact on the community than if we went to another organization because everyone needs the police,” Tzul said.

The SMCU will also be participating in the National Credit Union Convention, to be held at the Belize City Center on Saturday, October 18, where Credit Unions from around the country will gather do discuss pertinent issues affecting credit unions. The SMCU ends off the celebrations next Wednesday, October 23, with the Cayo district eliminations for the credit union quiz contest. The event will be a battle between 25 schools from the municipality and surrounding villages to determine which two students will go on to represent the Cayo district in the National Championships, being held in November.

Tzul noted that the commemoration also gives the SMCU a chance to highlight its new mortgage program, which gives borrowers a home loan for the competitive rate of 7.99 percent per annum with a 25-year contract period. Tzul added that persons wishing to set an appointment at the SMCU can call, or do so online via the credit union’s Facebook page or website.

National Credit Union Day 2019 is being celebrated under the theme “Local Service, Global Reach.”
