By Aaron Humes: Islanders of Ambergris Caye will now be able to get “Fu Wi Chikin” – and eggs, turkeys and other groceries – fresh from the mainland base of Quality Poultry Products at its newly expanded offices on Mangrove Drive, opened this morning.
Established in Spanish Lookout, Cayo District, in 1959 and on Ambergris in 1984, Quality Poultry was the first poultry company in Belize to be certified to Hazard Analysis and Common Control Points (HACCP) standard, meaning the quality isn’t just in the name.
General Manager Raymond Barkman told us the store, which also incorporates a mini-market, is their way of saying thank you to loyal San Pedranos who shopped at the previous dilapidated quarters for years.
The company brings in the meat from its Belize City office on North Front Street by boat to San Pedro where it unloads at its own dock on the lagoon in Boca del Rio, minimizing environmental impact.
Chair of the Board Allan Reimer said Quality Poultry has not forgotten its cooperative, family-owned start in the West, and remains committed to providing the best chickens, turkeys and other poultry products at rock-bottom prices – and without use of growth hormone and other artificial means.
Area representative Manuel Heredia Jr. in turned thanked the company for thinking of the needs of the fastest growing municipality in Belize and pledged continued support for the company.
The new store will be open until 5 this evening and whole chicken is selling for a one-time only price of $1.65 per pound. Discounts of 50 cents are available on other products and there are free samples available from Quality Poultry and fellow Western meat companies Running W Brand and Country Meats.
