Verdes return to top spot as Bandits lose undefeated status in exciting weekend of football

Posted: Sunday, October 27, 2019. 8:40 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A first slip-up of the season for Belmopan Bandits has handed control of the number-one overall seed in the upcoming playoffs back to western rivals Verdes. Wagiya handed the defending champions their first defeat of this season at the Carl Ramos Stadium this afternoon, with a 2 -1 final score. Meanwhile, Verdes hammered Placencia Assassins 7-1 in San Ignacio to regain the top spot.

Altitude won their crunch clash with Belize Defence Force 2-0 in Independence. The game between San Pedro Pirates and Freedom Fighters/Valley Pride was not played as the southern side failed to turn up to Ambergris Stadium, handing San Pedro three points by forfeit. But as noted by San Pedro player Anderson Cordova to TNC on its show, the forfeit hurts San Pedro financially, as the gate receipts are used to pay players, staff and even referees and other officials, and it shows disrespect to the home fans who turn up for the game.

After this topsy-turvy weekend, Verdes now lead with 27 points; Bandits are next on 25; San Pedro is third with 19, followed by Altitude with 18; BDF remain on 16, Wagiya has 15; Placencia six and Valley Pride four.

On Saturday night, November 2, Verdes and Bandits will clash at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in a crunch local “El Clasico” and the outcome of this game will determine whether Verdes stays on top or yield the top spot again to the Bandits. The “El Clasico” held earlier in September was a no-score draw played at the FFB Field in Belmopan after Norman Broaster Stadium was ruled out due to poor lighting.

Next Sunday, Placencia hosts surging Wagiya at 3:30; Valley Pride will host Altitude in Dangriga at 4, and in Belize City at the MCC at the same time, the two Belize district teams, San Pedro and BDF will clash. San Pedro and BDF are both looking to make the playoffs and so each time will be aiming for a victory in next week’s game.
