Hopkins village inaugurates rehabilitation and expansion of water system

By BBN Staff: Over 700 Belizeans, including residents and visitors, will benefit from the rehabilitation and expansion of the Hopkins Village Water System.

A ceremony to officially inaugurate the water system will be held on Friday, December 6, at the Hopkins Village Water Board office at 10 a.m.

The Hopkins Village Water System Project is being implemented under the Banana Accompanying Measures Program 2013 (BAM 2013) and jointly funded by the European Union (EU) and the Government of Belize (GOB) at a cost of €868,438.81 (BZ$2,040,831.35).

The water system project is of major importance for the social development of southern Belize.

It is designed to provide safe water for residents, meeting goal six of the Sustainable Development Goals.

These works included the installation of a 6” diameter transmission line, a combination of 7,100 meters of PVC and 1,800 meters of HDPE pipes (High-Density Poly Ethylene) through the marshlands, 5,795 meters of PVC distribution lines, and 3,705 meters of service lines with 855 service meters.

At the well site, a new well riser, including a 10 HP (Horse Power) submersible pump with its respective well assembly was installed. At the tank site, located at the Water Board office compound, a new 55,000-gallon tank was built, a new pump house which shelters two 10 HP Variable Frequency Drive pumps and its respective control panels, a chlorination tank and mixer, and a dosage pump that will inject chlorine into the water as the tanks get filled with water coming from the well site.

With the upgrade of the water system, quality of life has been improved, people will have access to healthier drinking water.

The overall objective of the BAM 2013 is to contribute to poverty reduction and improve the standard of living for targeted communities in southern Belize.

The collaboration between the EU and GOB has contributed and continues to support the sustainable development of Belize.

Sharon Young, Chief Executive Officer – Ministry of Labour, Local Government and Rural Development and Nicolaus Hansmann, team leader of EU technical office in Belize, will lead the inauguration ceremony.

Chairman of Hopkins Village, Orlando Augustine; Kathrine Mendez, Deputy National Authorizing Officer, Ministry of Economic Development & Petroleum; representatives of the contracting firm – Demars and Sons Limited, community representatives and other senior public officials will also participate in the inauguration ceremony.
