Trio accused in attack of policeman denied bail at Supreme Court

Posted: Friday, January 10, 2020. 8:49 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Brothers Magdalen Cal, 23; Avellino, 21; and Irvin, 18, have been denied bail on charges in the attack on Constable Edgar Teul on New Year’s Eve.

Appearing before Justice Herbert Lord, with attorney Hurl Hamilton, the trio heard from Crown Counsel Sherigne Rodriguez that their alleged victim remains in the hospital – stable after hand surgery but still recovering from a large chop wound to the head. There is no timeline for his release from hospital and she asked to delay the decision until it is seen how the cop recovers.

Justice Lord ordered no bail until April, which is when the session of the court which opens on Monday ends.

Constable Teul was trying to break up a fight on a football pitch in the outskirts of Belmopan, when some of the fighters turned on him, inflicting multiple chop wounds to his body.

At Belmopan Magistrate’s Court on January 2, Irvin Cal was charged with aggravated assault with a machete and his elder brothers with attempted murder, dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm. They return to court in February.
