Supreme Court reopens today

Posted: Monday, January 13, 2020. 9:45 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: This morning marks the ceremonial opening of the legal and judicial year.

Following a church service in Belize City, attorneys, judges and court officials will be parading into the center of town, to the Supreme Court’s headquarters on Treasury Lane.

There, the Chief Justice and Attorney General will present reports on the work of the court in 2019 and its plans for 2020.

Conspicuously absent will be senior members of the Bar Association led by the president and Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lynn Vidal.

They have complained that the Chief Justice has frozen her out of a seat on the Judicial and Legal Services Commission, the subject of a lawsuit.

There is also great speculation about the makeup of the court as one justice, Shona Griffith is set to depart and up to four more, including the Chief Justice himself, could follow.

There may also be efforts to draw attention to the failings of the justice system following this weekend’s pursuit and capture of suspect Kenrick Longsworth in the brutal assault of three boys, one of whom was murdered.

We will have more through the course of the day.
