Belize, stakeholders sign contract for acquisition of $12 million radar

Posted: Friday, January 17, 2020. 3:24 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Indra systems and COCESNA (the organization tasked with provision of air navigation services in Central America) signed a contract for Belize to acquire a primary radar.

The radar is valued at $12 million. The equipment will be used with Belize’s secondary radar in an effort to detect movements in Belizean airspace.

The primary radar is reportedly able to detect movements even if the aircraft has its transponder off.

Belizean authorities will be able to acquire real time information from the device which will assist them in detecting and responding quickly to illicit cargo.

The radar is expected to be functioning in August 2020.
