High school football: Corozal Community girls, Mount Carmel boys take national titles

By Aaron Humes: The girls’ football team of Corozal Community College in Corozal Town and their male counterparts from Mount Carmel High School in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Cayo are national secondary schools football champions after this weekend’s tournament in Belize City.

After the first round of games, Dangriga’s Delille Academy girls faced off with Belize City’s St. Catherine Academy for third place, winning 4-2 on penalties.

Then on the male side, Georgetown Technical High School boys defeated Ladyville Technical High, 2-1 in extra time, for third place in their category.

In the championship female match, Corozal Community College needed extra time to defeat Belmopan Comprehensive School 1-0, with goalkeeper Andrea Campos taking most valuable player honors.

Other winners of individual awards: Most goals Jeily Corado, Best Defense Marcia Ara, Best Goalie Jaleeny Belisle, Best midfielder Roshany Narvaez, Best striker Anahie Blanco,

And for the boys, most valuable player Kayser Tut hit the winner for Mount Carmel nine minutes into extra time to stop Belize High School of Agriculture, 1-0.

Honors were awarded as follows: Best Scorer – Simon Mejia, Best Defense – Leonardo Canul, Best Goalkeeper Cesar Panti, Best Striker – Zamir Bonilla.
