John Briceno agrees ‘time is too short’ for redistricting

Posted: Thursday, February 20, 2020. 11:30 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition John Briceno says that while he supports redistricting in principle, the time to implement it before the coming general election is too short.

“The problem we have is that the timing is too close to the general election. I don’t think we will have enough time, because it is such a massive exercise,” he explained.

He also objected to current chair of the Elections and Boundaries Commission, Doug Singh, being in charge as he is a former chairman of the United Democratic Party and there is an opportunity to tilt the election again to the UDP.

And he attacked as ‘asinine’ the idea that having re-registration before redistricting delayed the latter.

Re-registration, he pointed out, tells who and where voters are, while redistricting gathers and distributes them as near equal as possible.

The case filed by the Belize PEACE Movement continues on March 6.
