By BBN Staff: A number of international media outlets have reported that scientists at Greffex, a Houston, Texas-based genetic engineering company, claims to have developed a vaccine for the deadly novel coronavirus.
Entities such as msn.com, dailymail.uk and the Houston Business Journal, have said that Greffex announced that the company has completed the development of the vaccine and is now ready to begin animal trials and reviews, as per United States regulations.
These media entities have noted however that developing the vaccine is only one step in a lengthy process of actually reaching the point of mass-production and distribution, a process which is said to take anywhere between 18 months and two years.
The dailymail.uk noted “Greffex said that, for the sake of safety, its scientists did not use any form of the coronavirus itself – either live or inactivated – to make its vaccine. Most vaccines contain either live attenuated virus or an inactive form of the pathogen. However, the coronavirus is so poorly understood, has spread so quickly and has killed enough people that scientists at Greffex did
not want to risk exposure that could trigger the life-threatening illness known as COVID-19.”
Scientists all over the world are reportedly trying to develop a vaccine using various methods, including making vaccines based off the one used during the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak back in 2003.
