Belizeans join in on national prayer and fasting

Posted: Friday, April 10, 2020. 1:00 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: This morning, pictures of fish and cross buns flooded social media as the nation began day 1 of national prayer and fasting.

Christians of different denominations around the world and in Belize have joined in virtual prayer sessions so that everyone can be part of the celebration.

Annually, it is during this season that people vacation in exotic beach destinations to enjoy the holiday with their families. This year; however, the world is battling the COVID-19 Pandemic which has killed over 100,000 people worldwide.

Holy Week is celebrated as a time of devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ. Palm Sunday is the first day of the holy week and it is the Sunday before Easter. It commemorates Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem. Many churches around the world commemorate the day with the blessing and procession of palms.

Today, Good Friday, is the day in which Christians annually observe the commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Mark 15: Verses 24 and 25: 24 says: And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.”

Holy Saturday is the observance of the end of the Lenten season. This observance commemorates the final day of Christ’s death.

Easter Sunday is celebrated as Jesus resurrection from the dead.  In Matthew 28, verse 6 and 7 it says “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.”

As the world and Belize pray for protection and guidance during this pandemic, may we always remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.
