Airplane from Spanish Lookout loaded with water to douse Belmopan-area fires tomorrow

By Aaron Humes: Residents of the nation’s capital are expected to see an ease in the smoky sky surrounding them on Wednesday, thanks to neighboring Spanish Lookout.

The Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) is responsible for engaging an air tanker from the Mennonite community about ten miles west to douse persistent and slow-moving fires in the northeast and southeast of Belmopan starting from 5 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

The Department of the Environment (DOE) in a press statement says the fires are burning slowly in the vegetation of the area and are not expected to impact residential areas except for the smoke they generate. Residents are asked not to be scared of the tanker as it is here to help.

In the release, the DOE expressed gratitude to PACT, the Belmopan City Council and Forest Department staff which have been actively taking on fires near Belmopan and in the Vaca Forest Reserve, as well as business and community leaders and volunteers who have joined the effort.
