By Aaron Humes: Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has gone up by 31 cents from the last shipment and 56 cents more for wholesale sales according to a joint statement by Gas Tomza, Zeta Gas and Belize Western Energy Ltd.
The Government stated that the increase, described as small, was due to higher acquisition costs and hopefully should not greatly trouble consumers.
But this, the ex-importers say, goes against the government’s explicit promise that the importation of LPG through the National Gas Company Ltd. was being done to bring down the price of LPG to consumers.
According to the previous importers, it is not clear whether this wholesale price applies to them.
The former LPG importers assure that they can bring in LPG into Belize for far less than the monopoly and assure that the wholesale price of $2.26 now made into law, far exceeds their guaranteed lower wholesale price of $1.70, thereby costing them and any wholesale buyer a whopping fifty-six cents more per gallon.
However they have no importation license and are challenging the regime in court.
