Lobster season reopens today

Posted: Monday, June 15, 2020. 11:56 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Lobster lovers rejoice – the spiny crustacean delicacy returns to dinner plates today.

Today, Monday, is the re-opening of the lobster season which closed in February to allow populations to replenish.

However, fishermen are concerned about getting good prices, according to Channel 5 News, which quotes one of the top fishing cooperatives in Belize City as saying it is too early to tell what prices will be. This cooperative is making a two-tiered payment, part one now at $12 per pound and the other at a later date.

The industry awaits how COVID-19 will affect the export market, with first news coming in August.

One purchaser, Rainforest Seafoods, will purchase whole lobsters at $5.50 per pound and tails at $12.

This is also the time for the Lobster Fests hosted by three tourism and fishing destinations. San Pedro Town normally goes first, followed by Placencia and then Caye Caulker.

However, none will hold a Lobsterfest for the first time in a while due to COVID-19 effects.
