Police Department cracking down on nightclubs

Posted: Monday, July 6, 2020. 4:48 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Police Department is renewing its challenge on nightclubs, among the last establishments to reopen after the State of Emergency.

Not only are police being disallowed from working on or off-duty at such establishments for extra money, a popular nightclub on the Northside of Belize City was closed down on Saturday night and others were visited in the towns as well.

Sit and Sip club on the Newtown Barracks was closed and eight persons arrested for not wearing masks – and Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said it could have been more as quite a few others were seen improperly wearing masks but were not brought in.

The Commissioner said owners of establishments are asked to cooperate with ensuring that patrons wear masks and enforcing social distancing, or they will also face charges.

Police are also trying to cut down on the influence of gangs in extorting businesses, according to the Commissioner.

And Williams said that while police no longer need to specifically ask the purpose of people moving about on the street, they can be charged for loitering if they remain stationary in an area for longer than necessary or public drinking if they are consuming alcoholic beverages while doing so.
