By BBN Staff: Orange Walk Mayor Kevin Bernard has confirmed that a member of his town council has tested positive for COVID-19.
Bernard issued a video statement this week, explaining that a member of the council’s traffic department began to show signs of the infection on Wednesday, and was sent to home pending test results. He noted that the employee is currently in quarantine and that contact tracing exercises are underway.
“I would like to reassure our residents that the council, and specifically, the Traffic Department has taken necessary steps to sanitize and disinfect all areas of work,” Bernard said.
He noted that the council stands ready to take whatever additional measures are necessary for the safety of its employees and the wider public, and also lamented that “some individuals” have taken to stigmatize persons who have contracted COVID-19.
“We must let our guards down. We must always wear masks, always following social distancing protocols, and all guidelines established under the law,” Bernard added.
