National Council on Aging launching calendar of events for International Day of Older Persons

By BBN Staff: Today is International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) and the National Council on Aging (NCA) is holding a virtual launch for its calendar of events spanning the month of October.

The event will be live-streamed on the NCA’s Facebook page at 10:00 a.m.

Ix-Chel Poot Executive Director, NCA, explained that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the events had to be reworked, but it did present an opportunity as the emphasis of this year’s celebration of IDOP is on COVID-19.

“Instead of having one big event like we normally do, we’re having kind of a month of events and it culminates at the end of October we’ll be having digital literacy classes for older people,” Poot said.

She added that greater emphasis needs to be placed on older persons in light of the pandemic as they are the subpopulation most at risk of losing their life to COVID-19.

“Even in Belize, if you look at the people who are dying from it, you are seeing people above their fifties,” Poot added.
