Ministry of Health confirms one COVID-19 death on Sunday; total COVID-19 related deaths now 30

By BBN Staff: In Sunday’s COVID-19 update, the Ministry of Health confirmed that one person died of COVID-19.  The individual is a male in his late 50s.

The male patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) after having cardiac complications when he arrived. Diagnosis of COVID was made upon his admission to the ICU.

The individual has been identified as Kent Smith, a resident of Unitedville, who is a well known cowboy and champion of many rodeo events over the years in Belize and in nearby Peten, Guatemala. Condolences for one of Belize’s best cowboys poured in over social media when his death was made public late on Sunday evening.

With today’s death, a total of 30 persons have died in Belize due to COVID-19 related complications. The COVID-19 fatality rate is now 1.37% of total identified cases.

According to the Ministry, two (2) patients currently remain intubated at KHMH.
