Few arrests but many worries for Commissioner after Nomination Day activities

Posted: Wednesday, October 21, 2020. 5:14 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has fresh headaches after today’s Nomination Day proceedings when a number of breaches of the Quarantine Regulations were observed and recorded.

In a hastily-called press briefing this evening, Williams said his Police Department enlisted the help of the Belize City Council Traffic Department to escort the motorcades which for the most part went off without issue. We are told a total of five took place.

Two women were arrested at St. Luke Methodist School in Pickstock division this morning for quarantine violations and a number of other violators were photographed pending investigation.

But the bottom line is that Police could not legally stop the motorcades – and neither, it appears, could the political parties, despite last-minute decisions to back down.

Ultimately, Williams reminded, we are all responsible for respecting the regulations and not putting ourselves at risk of COVID-19.
More to come.
