Do Belizeans no longer care about COVID-19 cases and deaths?

Posted: Monday, November 9, 2020. 10:42 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Belize continue to surge as Belizeans return to some form of normalcy

But, are Belizeans still taking the necessary precautions to avoid the spread of COVID-19? Are we protecting ourselves, our children and our elders from this virus?

The latest data indicates that 98 new cases were identified on Sunday 8 November. On Tuesday last week (3 November 2020), a record 166 cases were detected and on Wednesday (4 November 2020), another 115 cases were detected.  Total COVID-19 cases in the country has now surpassed 4,000 and while 2,364 have recovered, 1,742 active cases remain.

Last week there was a record 7 COVID-19 deaths in 3 days. A total of 70 persons, including 48 males and 22 females, have now died from COVID-19 related symptoms. The death rate (as a percent of total positive cases) is 1.68% and based on the surge in new cases and the current level of hospitalization, more are expected to fall victim to the virus in the days ahead.

At this time, 23 COVID-19 patients remain hospitalized. The Ministry of Health’s (MOH) update on Sunday 8 November 2020 reported that there are five patients in the COVID-19 unit of the Western Regional Hospital (WRH), four patients admitted at the Corozal Community Hospital (3 confirmed cases and one-highly suspect case), two patients in the COVID-19 Unit of the Northern Regional Hospital (NRH, and 12 patients in the COVID-19 unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

Of the patients hospitalized in the public hospitals, 4 are intubated.

The Director of Health services (DHS) also confirmed that the private sector has 2 confirmed cases hospitalized including a healthcare worker. There is also a highly suspect case at a private institution in Belize City, also intubated.

Several districts seem to have community spread and people are still not wearing their masks properly. Shopping and market day continue with people gathering in large numbers and little to no social distancing being practiced. In addition there are ongoing reports of people hosting parties with large numbers of people.

Have we become numb to the large numbers of new cases detected in Belize or the news of COVID-19 related deaths that seem to have become a daily event? Just prior to the pandemic hitting Belize, we were all paying attention and scared; and then when it arrived in the jewel, we got angry. But do we no longer care about the spread of COVID-19 anymore and that it is taking the lives of almost 2 of every 100 persons who test positive?
