Fisheries Department: No decision taken on Port of Belize expansion project

Posted: Saturday, November 28, 2020. 9:54 am CST.

By BBN Staff: On Friday, the Fisheries Department said that there were misrepresentations made at the virtual public consultation regarding the proposed expansion project at the Port of Belize Limited (PBL), which amounted to the information being misleading.

The Department said that there is a process of reviewing an environmental impact assessment (EIA) which has not yet been concluded with respect to the PBL project.

“To date, there is no decision on this project by the Fisheries Department and to suggest anything differently would be misleading,” the Department said.

The department also said that its position will subsequently, be tabled when the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC) convenes to discuss this project.

The consultation included representatives from the Department of the Environment, as well as the local and international consultancy firms representing the PBL.
