Detainee at police station found hanged

By Aaron Humes: Police sources have confirmed that a detainee at the Queen Street Police Station was apparently found hanged sometime today.

Details are hard to come by at the moment, including the circumstances of his detention and what led to the discovery.

We are told that it is standard procedure for authorities to remove any item from a detainee or prisoner that they can use to harm themselves, including string and belts.

The detention cells at Queen Street, infamously referred to in some quarters as “Pisshouse”, were renovated on order of Commissioner of Police Chester Williams in 2019. A police officer had posted pictures of the condition of the cell while he was detained, but there had long been complaints about the condition of the oldest police station in Belize.
